Hello. I don't follow any sports so had a question for those of you who do. Are the disruptive events at the US Open that I've been seeing headlines about for the past couple of weeks common occurrences at these tournaments?

I ask because I mentioned in the Skyscript newsletter (Issue 11: August 2023) that with Mercury rx the matches could include "uncommon occurrences" but I'm wondering if these headlines are just a result of our 24 hr news cycle rather than these types of things actually being odd.

Also, have there been any upsets in the matches themselves?
I hadn't planned on writing anything on tennis for the newsletter but while working on my column that month a series of synchronicities brought the tournament and its proximity to the Mercury retrograde period to my attention, so I rolled with it.

Now I'm contemplating whether I should put some focus on sports astrology. I run the yard operations at a lumberyard, my previous job was supervisory in waste management, and prior to that I worked as a gunsmith at a major firearms manufacturing company- so I've always worked around a lot of blue-collar sports fan types. Some of them knew/know I practice astrology and over the years I've been coaxed into giving predictions on games from time to time. Oftentimes, successfully calling the winner. Now I'm wondering, is this a sign to explore that possibility further? I'm not into gambling, but sports betting was recently legalized in my state so I could potentially pick up clients this way.

Does anyone here do this regularly and have thoughts or recommendations to share, or have an opinion as to my question above about the commonality of these headlines at tournaments? If so, I'd be interested to hear what you've got to say.

Hi Jason, I watch a fair amount of tennis. Once and a while a fan will get tossed, a player or two acts up (Kyrgios nearly always acts up) and someone nearly always complains about something. What is unusual is the protester and Disney dispute, also, a number of top players went out early although the semi-finals only has one true upset winner in the group, Ben Shelton was, I think, seeded in the 40’s vs the top 20.

As to picking winners, you might want to check out John Frawleys books on sports astrology.

I'm pretty sure I have a copy of Frawley's book here somewhere. I'll have to look through some boxes of books I have stored away. I did recall having read this article by Bernadette Brady (w Lee Lehman) a while back and was able to find it through a quick web search after work yesterday. I also found this analysis by Brady. In the past, I looked at games through a horary lens because the person asking had a stake in the outcome/favored team. It'll be interesting to test these methods on any game. Anyway, thanks again. You've piqued my interest in sports astrology, again. Went digging through my books and files for Zoller's "Bonatti on War" and also dug out a 1998 article by J. Lee Lehman that is still available online Predicting the Outcome of Games or Confrontations: Where to Start. I also found the charts of a bunch of old basketball games I was trying to practice with using Frawleys rules (I know I have some old hockey ones around too). My problem is I can never be pessimistic about the teams I root for; I can rationalize a win out of any chart...lol

I'm curious now to see if I can pick who will win tomorrow's final: Djokovic or Medvedev or even today's match between Gauff and Sabalenka. The problem is the start time, "not before 4pm" is not useful; there are always delays. Have to think Djokovic has the edge, and I prefer Gauff to Sabalenka...objectivity is needed.

LOL, that's understandable. I'm probably fortunate in that I don't follow any teams so couldn't care less who wins. I assume that helps for just looking at the astrology without expectation or bias. That doesn't mean some charts aren't tricky still though. Once I get the ball rolling (pun intended ) I'll try and remember to jump on here and post some analysis/results. I look forward to discussing some game charts with you in the future!

A general guideline is to predict the time when goals will be scored you have to add a minute by minute on kick/off time and see if there are some change regarding signs on cusps or regarding planet entering in the new house. But the problem is that not every change means goal, but every change is possible for goal.
This one I have tested it watching a few games and it seems close to a reality check. But as he says 'possible for goal' but it can also be a penalty or a squirrel running up the fences on the field.
And a prominent Saturn is great for defence or goaltending.

The problem of an elected time?
It should focus on the 'time with the most finality you can give to the event' or the latest final time you can control (understanding in the mind of the players).
For a tennis event, I would say when the players enter the court, because before that any player can drop out of the tournament due to injuries, illness or the weather.

Many years ago, Nina Gryphon did a review on W.J. Simmonite, 19th century English astrologer (removed, broken link) from his book The Prognostic Astronomer, or Horary Astrology (1851)

'Simmonite's Rules for Winning'
The most interesting part was when she said:
“Will a ticket in a lottery be a blank or a prize?”
These rules (p 99) are fine as far as they go, though it’s probably best to apply them *before* purchasing said ticket. Otherwise, one can just wait for the drawing without casting a horary.
1. The Part of Fortune well-aspected, and its dispositor in a good aspect, and the ruler of the first and the Moon well dignified and well-aspected, there is no doubt of the ticket being a prize.
2. The Part of Fortune in the tenth, or many planets dignified in angles, and the Moon at the same time unafflicted and in good aspect to the Sun, these portend a chance of success.
3. If the ruler of the first, second, Part of Fortune, and the Moon be in affliction in any way, then loss; and you may safely predict the ticket being drawn a blank. I more generally take the fifth house for these things, the same as in horse racing, etc.

In my own limited experience, this is the closest common sense argument I have read on sports betting. To which I would include the Part of Spirit (Sun) and the Part of Victory (Jupiter). Why? Simon Chokoisky, who has many YouTube videos, explained that the Part of Fortune is what makes you unique as you combine the AS, Sun and Moon together.

I have also found midpoints of Jupiter to be super importants.
Combined in different ways
Example:
Donald Trump has SU/MO = MA/JU - Successful business man.
He also has the Equatorial ASC or the East Point = SU/JU - The rich or wealthy man.
And the sum of Sun + Kronos = ASC The boss, an important person.

A look into Diurnals as well and I recently came across a video from Bernd Singer in 2009 (Uranian astrology) where he explains that our personal daily horoscope starts when the SU and the MC come back every day to the same angle at birth according to Witte. Which is close to a diurnal except that you do not take the terrestrial latitude into consideration which will widen or shorten the angular distance between the Sun and the MC in signs of short or long ascencions. And looking up what midpoints or planets are in the SU/MC midpoint of that person for a specific day.

Every chart has each degree of the zodiac already colored at birth.
Which you can find with the 4 basics mathematical operations: addition (sum), subtraction (differences), multiplication (4th harmonic focus) and division (midpoint). And they can become manifested through the 90 degree dial which revolve around the cardinal axis.
The focus goes on the Jupiter combinations. For example, my natal Jupiter in the 4th Harmonic falls at 10 Taurus which happens to be sextiling my natal Jupiter and it is true that this degree has been very lucky in my life. And people or organizations born around May 1st (10 Taurus) have been significant in opening up opportunities for me.
But I have not found yet a software handling a synthesis of these mathematical operations.

The chart for the Woman's Final September 9, 2023 4:19PM EDT 73W50 40N45 Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing, NY.
The time is based on Gauff's first serve to start the game. Based on what I can remember after a quick refresh, I gave the 1st and Saturn (L1) to Gauff as the initiator of the match and the challenger (she is seeded 6th to Sabalenka's 2nd, soon to be 1st, seed I think even if she doesn't win the Open). The west side of the chart certainly looks stronger. Saturn is retro (debility) in a succedent house (moderate strength) without dignity unless you count face. Gauff also gets the Sun as the Moon last separated from his sextile. Don't see how he can be of much help as he's in the 8th so, as an authority, he is in opposition to Gauff and would favour Sabalenka.

The 7th is in Cancer with the Moon in the 7th so very strong for Sabalenka and she is applying to a detrimented Mars in the 8th, implies she has a stronger store of battle skills and if Brady's comment is right

"a malefic in detriment or fall greatly benefits the party it signifies”

he fortifies the Moon considerably. And lastly, according to Bonatti, the Sun and Moon in the Western hemisphere favour the person signified by the 7th.

It will be over in a couple of hours so won't take long to know who wins. Curious to see if Saturn retro will make it a long game (full 3 sets with breakpoints). Or if Mars in the 8th will mean Sabalenka will control the game and speed it up.

Well, that was short and sweet (about 2hrs and 7 min) and I got it totally wrong. Scratching my head as to why. Did the 7th really belong to Gauff? It was on her home court, so to speak. Or did I not give enough weight to Saturn as the superior planet even though he was without dignity, retro, and in a weaker house? Be interesting to see how tomorrows chart will work out, neither Djokovic or Medvedev.

Sophia Mason has this simplified method.
- She gives the lower part of the chart to one player and the upper part to the other player
or teams if that applies.
- The planet are 'energies'
- Angular Houses aspected within 2 degrees (1 degree is better)
- Aspects between planets within 1 degree.

What we know of the players, Gauf is the youngest one and the favorite of the crowd so Cancer 7th House with the Moon in it. Capricorn to Sabalenka.
2 planets aspecting the Angles
- Saturn in the lower part and ruling the AS (Advantage Sabalenka)
- Venus in the upper part (Advantage Gauf)
- Venus sesqui-quadrate Neptune (Slight advantage to Gauf as Venus is Angular) but the aspect is 1 degree 18' separating
- Moon in trine to the POF and ruling Gauf's AS (Advantage Gauf)

This quick method is somewhat reliable for a quick analysis.
What I am questioning
- Do I feel comfortable enough as an astrologer with this method? Not always.
- Do I pick up the right time?
- Are there other factors to consider? (Transneptunians, Arabic Parts etc).
- Midpoints showing up victory? In this chart the MC= MO/SA ruling both the AS/DS axis = moment of separation between the 2 women.

I have not reached a conclusion as I know it is very difficult art to master. Looking at their natal chart, checking progressions, midpoints and diurnals would probably give better results.
But I salute you are taking a stand in your analysis. This is the only way to learn.

Hats off to you for putting yourself out here. Reading over your analysis, I can follow along with your line of reasoning. Not being especially fluent in these charts yet, I had the simple, rapid, first impression that both benefics being angular with Venus pushing virtue to Jupiter in what would be the 7th house competitor's derived 10th, looked good for whoever was 7 - additionally, the Moon in its domicile close to the 7th cusp has dignity there and in Taurus (derived 10) but how to assess who was 7? That's an area I'm still in the dark on.

Thanks for sharing this with us. As Ouranos mentioned, It's the only way to learn. And it's great to have some comrades to discuss with along the way.

I've got errands to run and other stuff to work on/research, but if I utilize my time wisely, I might try to deliver my own analysis on one of the games set for later today. We'll see how that goes.

Thank you Ouranos, for all the links and the chart review. I've never seen Sophia Mason's site or the method she is using. I'm not quite sure I follow her logic mostly as I'm used to thinking of the upper half of the chart as the "public" area and the lower as the "hidden" and the "east" as self/inner motivated (which makes sense to me for using it as the "challenger" side, the one who initiates rather than waits for things to happen) and the west as motivated by circumstances.

I have been thinking about using the descriptive elements of L1 and L7, which would mean Saturn to Sabalenka as the older player (She was also the more emotional during play...Pisces?) and the Moon to Gauff as the younger, also emotional but more controlled (domicile?).

The chart for the Men's Final will be very similar, essentially the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars all move roughly 1 degree as does the Asc and MC. The Moon moved 12°, from 19 Cancer to 1 Leo so, IF the Moon is the younger it will represent Medvedev as the younger (Moon) man (Leo) and Saturn the older Djokovic. IF Medvedev serves first and the game starts before 4:25pm (at which point Saturn will be in 1st) and Medvedev wins we'll have an idea that ruler descriptive circumstances might be valid at least in terms of age or possibly seeding (Saturn established player, Moon still up and coming?). If it does start a bit later, putting Saturn in the 1st, and Djokovic wins descriptive use might still apply. But in either case, messes up using the L1 for the first serve. I did miss the coin toss, to see who decides whether to serve or receive first. Maybe it was Sabalenka, don't know. I will play closer attention to the start of today's match.

Thanks again for your links and thoughts. One comment, on the Magi Society, I spent about two years (ages ago, I have their software about somewhere on a 3.5" disc!) tinkering with their ideas but in the end. Their ideas are interesting but I didn't have much practical luck with them, at least, not enough to deter me from Zain's basics. Be curious to know what you think of them, if you do spend some time on them.
