"Freud discovered Italy quite late, after losing his reproductive match with his father Jacob. Jacob had 12 children from two different women, Sigmund only 6 children with the same woman. Rather honorable, but the father, Jacob, proved more powerful. Tired of his genital feat, Sigmund heads south. The most surprising thing is that he will travel more and more to Italy with his sister-in-law, whom he presents in hotels as his wife. This sister-in-law, Minna, sister of his wife Martha (rather pretty), will remain strangely single. In the style of traveling to Italy with a sister-in-law, Freud has a sulfurous precursor that he ignores: Sade."

So Freud seemed to have been rather Uranian when travelling.
------------------ Immediately, for Sigmund, it is enchantment. In Venice, in 1895, he saw a fairy tale that no photograph or story could convey. It's a whirlwind, where two days have become six months. He sees incredible things. He is neither tired nor serious, he is having fun like a schoolboy on vacation. Italy is magical and magnificently harmonious. He is in Padua, in Bologna, in Florence, and even begins to be overwhelmed and crushed by a 'constant voluptuousness'. In a church, he observes several hundred of the prettiest girls of Friuli for a holiday mass: "The splendor of the ancient Roman basilica did me good in the midst of the poverty of the modern era ."
Minna, his sister-in-law, writes of him: "He has an insolently splendid face, and he is as gay as a finch. Obviously, he can't sit still." Freud, as cheerful as a finch!...
Entry into Rome in September 1901: "It's incredible that we haven't come here for years."
In Naples, Freud smokes, drinks, eats, he is too hot, he bathes. Soon, he is in Sorrento, and has a coffee "in the shade of the trees, surrounded by yellow and green oranges. In Sicily, Palermo is "a place of incredible delights." And here he is again in Rome: "The women in the crowd are very beautiful to the extent that they are not foreign. Roman women, strangely enough, are beautiful even when they are ugly, and, in fact, there are few among them who are."

So travelling for Freud was full of discoveries extending beyond expectations.

From Freud's passion for Rome and Italy, we will remember this proof of his marvelous and naive modesty in front of Titian's painting 'Sacred Love and Profane Love' (a richly dressed woman, and another, or the same, naked.)
"The name we gave to this painting has no meaning, and we don't know what meaning to give it. It is enough that it is very beautiful."
The meaning, Lieber Doktor, is however very clear: a woman can be both dressed and naked, like Love itself.
