In this day and age of constant connectivity and 24-hour news cycles, it seems hard to imagine that it was just over 100 years ago, in 1919, that the first transmission of human speech was successfully transmitted over radio. (Timeline of radio)

Today marks an important anniversary in the history of American broadcasting (and politics): just eight days after taking office as chief executive of a country in the throes of a banking crisis, President Roosevelt addressed a crowd of more than 60 million people via radio broadcast. It was the first broadcast in a series of them throughout his presidency that would come to be known as his "fireside chats".

I think the chart for the moment of the broadcast is interesting, so I'm sharing it here.

• Saturn, dignified in radio-wave-looking-symbol Aquarius, ruling the 3rd (communications) and on the IC

• The Sun (leader) ruling 10 (leadership/government; things coming into full view) while in the 5th (radio was a major source of entertainment at the time)

• The Sun's recent opposition to retrogressing, debilitated Jupiter, ruler of 2 (the economy); Jupiter is also dispositor of the Sun

• The Moon (the public) in need of hope (11th) and concerned with the nation's treasury (11th) applies to Mercury (radio, speeches) in the 5th (entertainment; ambassadors)

All right, I just blasted this off after discovering this piece of history and only briefly looking at the chart this morning, but I've got to get ready for work. Anyone's welcome to add additional commentary.

15 Leo = Aries Point seems to be a key factor in the Timeline of radio.

December 1894: In Italy, Guglielmo Marconi developed the first radio system specifically for communication. (Uranus square and Jupiter semi-square Apollon at 15Leo)
2 years later, he was awarded the initial patent for radio-based wireless telegraphy and in 1897, he established a radio station on the Isle of Wight, England.
By that time, the Nodal axis was conjunct Apollon (wide reahing connections in social, trade or political structures. Many and widespread connection points.)

• Sun (leader) in 5th (entertainment) ruling 10th (president) trine Pluto (masses) in 9th (publicity, propaganda) for "communicating to the masses"
• Uranus (unusual) in 6th (service) square Pluto - the chats were a form of public service (6th) for the people; it was a new approach (cardinal signs) and 'modern' (Uranus)
• Neptune conjunct South Node conjunct Mars in 10th with Mars (ruling 1st, people) all in the opposition of Saturn (fear) - wondering if that South Node is 'destroying' the people's disillusion, anger and fear; the chats did seem to help (if I remember my history correctly)
