In astrology, the only method I knew involved using the synodic cycles of planets (their relationship with the Sun) to calculate age. It seems that this idea can be used to measure quantity.

- May 17th was the First Quarter Moon (the number of protesters gradually increased - approximately 2,000 people).
- May 24th, just beginning the Full Moon (the number of protesters peaked - 100,000 people).
- May 28th was the Last Quarter Moon (the number of protesters began to decrease - 70,000 people).

The changes in the number of protesters correspond to the phases of the moon.

Does anyone know of any other methods to observe the quantity?

In his paper 'Basic qualities and moods' by Mario Costantino (found on the website of Giuseppe Bezza), he says...
"The action of light on primordial matter, in its shades considered fundamental, generates the elements. Therefore, the quantity of light is maximum in the fire, it is a little more reduced in the air, it decreases further in the water, until it almost disappears in the earth....
The whole corporeal world is therefore the result of the presence of sunlight in matter.
In the de caelo Aristotle teaches that of the two primary species of movement, the circular is proper to the sky, while the movement in a straight line is proper to simple sublunar bodies. Of these, the light ones move up, the heavy ones down. The absolutely light body is the fire, the absolutely heavy is the earth. Now all the above qualities can be determined by
1) The seasons
2) The time of the day
3) The Sun/Moon cycle which is the latter you are exposing here but also the stars in relationship to the Sun, which is

** Deprived of luminous emanation = cool (NM)
** Increasing in light, oriental = moisten (FQ Moon)
** Full in light = heat up (FM) volume, multiple, many
** Diminishing in light, occidental = dry up (LQ Moon)



So what you are saying makes total sense here. Volume is certainly part of this cycle.
