New Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and his Cabinet Sworn In

1
Canada had a new Prime Minister sworn in today, March 14, 2025. The ceremony took place at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Ontario and officially began at 11:16 AM EDT. While Carney began reading the oaths at 11:25 AM the signing of them by Carney, the head of the King's Privy Council and Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada, was not completed until 11:30 AM. That's the time I used for the Swearing in Chart shown below.
Mark Carney - Swearing In.png Mark Carney - Swearing In.png Viewed 12418 times 92.24 KiB
The chart appears to be quite descriptive of the times; below are some observations and comments:
- The most elevated planets are the Sun (L3, L4) and Saturn (L10, L9, L8). Both planets indicate leaders with the Sun pointing to the leader of a neighbouring country (3rd) and the opposition party (4th) and Saturn indicating Canada's leader (10th).

The opposition party has been pushing for an election, indicated by the Moon (political classes) in 4th opposition 10th. At the same time Canada is under an existential threat from the US President who appears to be intent on using punitive tariffs to cripple Canada's economy with the hope that it will make Canadians amenable to the country being annexed by the US, allowing them unfettered access to Canada's resources. This view is reinforced by Leo covering the 3rd (neighbouring country) and 4th (Canada's land, minerals, etc) with the Sun in the 8th (tariffs) from Leo. That this theme played out overwhelmingly on the day is also emphasized by Saturn combust; who will lead Canada will largely be decided by who Canadians think will best thwart the US President's schemes (Neptune conjunct Sun). With Saturn ruling the 8th (tariffs) in the 3rd (neighbouring country) from the 8th. That the Sun is representing both the US President and the leader of the opposition is instructive; both are right-wing and Pierre Poilievre's style often mirrors President Trump's.

That publicity and international trade are involved is indicated by Aquarius on the 9th and 10th. Canada is not the only country the US President is threatening with tariffs. Should also consider that the day included the swearing in of a new cabinet (8th).

- The Moon is also ruler of the 2nd in the 3rd from the 2nd, reinforcing the emphasis on neighbouring countries (3rd) and the people of Canada's resources (2nd).

- The 11th (legislature) / 5th (elections) axis is critical at 29 PI / VI on Fortune's 4th (home, country) / 10th (Prime Minister). Of note is Neptune at 29 PI, partile conjunct the 11th within 5° of the Sun and within 1° of the Moon perfecting an opposition. Neptune can bring about delays, confusion, disruption and possible downfall of the legislature, and here, it is likely indicating that parliament, being non-functional since late September given the PC's filibustering (stymieing any possible legislative action), was prorogued on January 6th by Trudeau, with the Governor General's permission; it must either reopen by March 24, 2025, or, barring that, an election must be held. Everyone is expecting Carney to call an election sometime within the next 2 weeks.

- Pluto (cooperation, compulsion, coercion) in the 8th partile conjunct the 9th and sextile Mercury (L1) and Venus (L12) is forcing the issue; under normal circumstances, it is unlikely an election would have been called before September 2025.

- That all of this has blindsided Canadians is seen by Jupiter (L7 foreign country) and Uranus (unexpected disruption) in the 12th of secret enemies coupled with Venus (L12) in the 11th with Mercury (L1) ... Canadians have always looked on Americans as good friends (11th) and neighbours, fingers crossed that will continue to hold true and what we're experiencing now will be a short lived aberration. Especially given that the US President and his tariffs have, are, and will harm the American people as much, if not more, than they harm Canadians.

I am probably missing any number of indications but it does look as though the people of Canada are expecting an election soon (Mercury ruling 1st and 5th in 11th opposition 5th) and are looking for someone to lead the fight for their resources and country (Mercury disposited by Mars in the 2nd, 4th from 11th, trine Sun/Saturn in 10th).

Curious to know what other's may see.

hi jane

someone asked me to get the exact time for his official new role as pm of canada, or is it as servant to the king of england ( based on what he was reading in the oath taking)?? i got 11 28 50 for this moment which is very close to the time you are using here.. the audience broke out in applause a few milliseconds later.. he signed the book - first signature - 11 29 10 - all eastern daylight savings time... i got this from watching the live cbc feed... here is the sidereal zodiac chart for this event below.. i haven't analyzed it...
mark carney sworn in.jpg mark carney sworn in.jpg Viewed 12416 times 73.39 KiB
thanks for your commentary.. i see the nodal axis and the sun moon opposition square onto the ascendant axis, which presents a set of problems and challenges for the new leader and perhaps by extension the people of canada...

i am surprised at the amount of bellyaching on the part of canucks with regard to trump.. he could just as easily flip his position in a few days given how fickle he is.. why do our canuck politicians get so easily sucked into this?? i think it is because they want to appear to be tough guys themselves.. you can't fight a trade war with a bully.. the bully will win when he represents a country 10X the size of ours... i am certain many see this, no matter whether they live in the usa or canada... as for canadian relations with americans, it seems to me canucks are a very fickle bunch as well to respond in this knee jerk manner... but as you know i like playing devils advocate!

i will continue to see our american neighbours in a positive light and not as representative of trump here.. it is no reason to brush all americans with the same paintbrush as we appears to be doing here with trump..

--------- i am getting ongoing ''error'' messages when i try to post on skyscript... am i the only one?? it started today for me...
--- thanks for the update on this deb!

Hi James
it is no reason to brush all americans with the same paintbrush as we appears to be doing here with trump..
Don't think that is happening, Canadians usually make it clear it's the policies coming out of the White House, and not Americans, they're angry at.

hi jane

regarding the time of carney taking his oath to serve the king and canada ( in that order?) i have a few things to say about this chart in sidereal.. my feeling without the astrology is that the con fellow pp is going to get a minority gov't and that an election will be called soon.

the nodal axis is squaring directly onto the ascendant.. north node in the 10th - but the south node is in the 4th... the people don't have a say until the actual election takes place.. this liberal party coronation of mark carney as implied by the north node and many of the planets in the 10th, is all fine and good, but it is the people who need to make the choice if this is a democracy we live in.. the ruler of the ascendant is in pisces getting ready to go retro... it is conjunct the 12th house ruler venus which is strong in pisces, but also getting ready to go retrograde and heading under the beams of the sun... the ruler of the pisces planets is jupiter in the 12th house and sign.. their is a mutual reception between jupiter and venus... perhaps the levers of power that work behind the scenes were involved in making sure carney got the gig here...

saturn, the ruler of the 8th and 9th houses and also where the midheaven lands, appears strong in it's own sign, but is just coming out of a conjunction with the sun a day or two previous..

i do think the financial angle and carneys previous work with goldman sachs, bank of canada and bank of england put him in as an insider for the corporate power and elite that rule canada.. i wish this fellow represented a change, but frankly the options for canucks here are not good and he or the con leader will continue to look after these same interests from where they are coming from... the moon in this chart rules the 2nd house.. it is the handle to a bucket chart and an important pivot to the chart, being 1 of only 2 planets below the horizon.. it too is caught up in the nodal axis challenges and i think speaks to the idea that the people of canada will not have their needs met with this change in the liberal leadership...

i have 2 charts for canada, although i have mostly only used the one shown below and the one that nic campion references in his book of world horoscopes which is a midnight chart with neptune on the ascendant... the chart is shown below tropical zodiac..

as can be seen the transit of pluto on the ascendant of the 2025 aries ingress is in opposition to mercury in the canada chart.. mercury rules the 8th and 5th houses... there is also a conjunction involving aries ingress jupiter in gemini, and natal canada venus that lands in the 5th which looks positive on the surface..

going back to the 2025 aries ingress chart, mars at approx 20 cancer is squaring onto the canada chart aries ascendant/neptune conjunction..

Hi james ... with respect to your comments on the Sidereal Swearing in Chart,
james_m wrote: the ruler of the ascendant is in pisces getting ready to go retro... it is conjunct the 12th house ruler venus which is strong in pisces, but also getting ready to go retrograde and heading under the beams of the sun... .
Mercury Sta. Retro. is ruling the Asc in both the tropical and sidereal; I think its Aries placement in the tropical is more descriptive of Canadian's mood: stubbornly (sta.) angry (sqr Mars dispositor) with the Retro indicating them being taken aback by foreign ambassadors (Venus co-ruling 5th) acting as friends (in 11th) now revealing themselves to be secret enemies (Venus L12). Venus retro in Aries would, I think, also indicate this behaviour is not the norm for them either.
the ruler of the pisces planets is jupiter in the 12th house and sign.. their is a mutual reception between jupiter and venus... perhaps the levers of power that work behind the scenes were involved in making sure carney got the gig here..
  • Jupiter (L7) in the 12th occurs in both charts; in the tropical chart, it seems to indicate a partner (7th), thought to be 'good' (Jupiter as a benefic) acting in bad faith (Jupiter in detriment in Gemini) as a secret enemy (12th). Jupiter is sextile too, and received by, Mercury indicating Canadians (Mercury) are responding to it in that light; as a beneficial partner now acting in bad faith.
  • Jupiter is sextile Venus but there is no reception and it is notable that Jupiter is only involved in "separating" aspects; an indication that this behaviour has already occurred. As this is going on between the significators of the 12th, 11th, 7th, and 1st I don't think it is connected to Carney's being elected to head the Liberal party per se. Rather, I think that is more strongly indicated by...
  • Mars dispositing the pair (Mercury, Venus) in Cancer (home, land) in the 2nd of the people's wealth and property and the source of the anger while separating from the Sun (L3) and in an applying trine to Saturn (L10). So they are angry with the leader of a neighbouring country (Mars sep Sun, L3) for attacking their property and home (2nd, Cancer) and are looking for a leader with a steady hand (Mars applying Saturn L10).
I was looking for other viewpoints on Carney's win and came across a post by Laurien Rueger on her site Astrology, Eh?. She notes that the recent Lunar Eclipse at 23 VI 56 squares the charts Asc/Desc.
20250314-Lunar Eclipse.png 20250314-Lunar Eclipse.png Viewed 12182 times 91.07 KiB
I'd add that it falls across the 3rd/9th axis (neighbours and international trade). She also notes that Carney's solar return will happen the following day (he was born March 16, 1965 in Fort Smith, NWT (time unknown) marking the date as an important one for him personally. It would also mark his 60th birthday; a 1st House profection, pointing to the fulfillment of a natal promise (too bad we don't have a birth time for him :()
i do think the financial angle and carneys previous work with goldman sachs, bank of canada and bank of england put him in as an insider for the corporate power and elite that rule canada.. i wish this fellow represented a change, but frankly the options for canucks here are not good and he or the con leader will continue to look after these same interests from where they are coming from...
I think his popularity (the polls today actually have the Liberals ahead of the PCs) is based largely on the idea that his background makes him uniquely qualified to keep a steady hand on the economy and that he will keep his head when dealing with Trump. It would appear, at the moment, that the change most Cdn's wanted was one of leadership; and all this tariff and 51st state nonsense has driven change for the sake of change from our heads; stability and "peace, order, and good governance" is, I think, top of mind for most of us now. The times also require the ability to adapt quickly and PP is sounding like a broken record.
the moon in this chart rules the 2nd house.. it is the handle to a bucket chart and an important pivot to the chart, being 1 of only 2 planets below the horizon.. it too is caught up in the nodal axis challenges and i think speaks to the idea that the people of canada will not have their needs met with this change in the liberal leadership...
I recently picked up John Michael Greer's The Astrology of Nations and found he has an interesting take on the Moon in Mundane Charts. He says:

"I find that the Moon represents the fraction of the public that has a voice in a nation's political life. This is always a minority, although it can be a larger or smaller minority depending on the political and social structure of the nation.
We can speak of that minority as the political class of a society....Generally speaking, in a modern industrial society, the sector of the population from the upper middle class on up---say, the upper 20% or so by income, more or less---have access to the political process. Those whose incomes place below this line do not....The Moon represents the political classes, who claim to speak for the public as a whole, while the first house and its ruler represent the masses."
(p49)

If he's correct in his observation, the Moon here is most likely to represent that "political class" and the opposition party in particular (being in the 4th) with the opposition to Saturn and the Sun highlighting PP's difficulty in becoming PM coming from both Carney (Saturn) and Trump (Sun). The PC's being out of touch would also be indicated by Moon disposited by Mercury (L1 - the masses) who is averse in Aries; he is likely to have problems appealing to both a wider audience and the extreme right wing members of his own party. Greer, under his description of a debilitated Moon (in Dry Virgo, opposition Saturn and Sun) in the 4th says "The party out of power will likely be troubled by internal conflicts." (p51) Worth keeping an eye on.

I usually look at both the Dominion of Canada Midnight Chart and the Constitution Chart but I will leave commenting on them for a later post.

hi jane

great post, full of ideas and insights! thanks...

i see the relativity of much of astrology, and perhaps because i have an active imagination, i am capable of holding to the idea that their is merit and value in both zodiacs.. i realize i am in a minority and that most want to identify with one and throw out the other... people are very good at rationalizing and justifying a position too, and this all feeds into my basic viewpoint... but these ideas aren't what this thread is about..

regarding polls - a long time ago i took a course called 'sociology of the media' which i found to be very thought provoking.. the idea is that polls are used to massage people's mind in an influential way.. maybe they get it right some of the time too! canada suffers from a similar set up as the usa with essentially a 2 party system, here in canada - liberals and conservatives... that is most of the history of canada politically, with some minor exceptions.. both these mainstream parties represent the status quo and as i understand it, they both represent corporate power before they represent the people of canada.. where they differ is in the social realm - lbgtq and etc. but they are generally always on the same page in looking after the elites and maintaining corporate power.. we will see if canada has any change of the status quo, but getting either of these 2 parties in power, is not a change.. it is more of the same!!

the insights from laurian reuger are interesting... it is unfortunate we don't have a birth time for carney...

the book on mundane astrology by john michael greer - where did you hear about that?? it is quite fascinating someone has written a book in 2025 on mundane astrology! it is an interesting idea he presents on the role of the moon in the chart.. i am curious to know more of the book.. how far have you gotten into it?? thanks jane!

My comments on the tropical vs sidereal aren't meant as an argument for tropical over sidereal; it's simply to contrast where the emphasis appears to lay, for example, the sidereal with the planets in Pisces in the 10th and 9th and Jupiter in the 12th looks to be emphasizing the leaders, foreign nations and enemies while the tropical emphasis brings in Aries, Mars, the 11th and 2nd; just a different focus.

Agree, for the most part. We have been a little luckier than the US in having a viable 3rd party (NDP) although sadly Layton and Mulcair pretty much put paid to it and Singh may give it the final death blow :(
the insights from laurian reuger are interesting... it is unfortunate we don't have a birth time for carney...
Yes, I tried looking through a Fort Smith newspaper archive for a possible birth announcement but no luck. We don't have PP's either, more's the pity.

I ran across Greer awhile back; read his blog on occasion, usually with regard to the Tarot. The book is basically what you find in H.S. Green C.E.O. Carter, Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson, Zadkeil, Pearce, Ramesey, etc. (the oldest source he appears to reference directly is Bonatti). The infois laid out in a very straight forward and easily accessible manner. His observations on the Moon stood out as it's the first time I've seen it used to describe a subset of the people rather than people in general.

The text is in 3 parts: The Art of Mundane Astrology, Case Studies, and Predictions. The case studies include a look at two famous predictive failures by Carter, McKinley's assassination, Edward VIII's abdication, the rational behind Sibley's US Chart, the Grand Mutations of 1425 and 1163, and and a close look at Zadkiel's work.

The Predictions section includes a study of the 2020 Grand Mutation (Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions moving into Air signs), the Foundation Chart of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan around noon on August 19, 2021 (he thinks the Taliban used an astrologer to choose the moment), and The Great Conjunction of 2040.

Found it all quite interesting.

very informative and helpful.. thanks! just as an aside, i am very unhappy with the direction that canada has and is taking on the international stage.. at this point voting for me is about voting for the lesser of various evils that seem likely, regardless of who gets in..

i appreciate the perspective on the book by greer.. thanks! i have to go down to victoria in the next hour to play music later tonight.. i'd like to offer something astrological on the charts i've shared, or on the one's you've shared, but i can't do it today! cheers james

Hi james ... here's my read on the 1867 Chart and Carney/Poilievre connections to it.
BNA-Carney-PP.png BNA-Carney-PP.png Viewed 11920 times 99.19 KiB
Aries Ascendant with Mars peregrine in Virgo in the 6th (labourers, armed forces, civil service). Mars also rules Scorpio on the 8th (debts, the cabinet, tariffs) and is in the 11th (parliament) from the 8th. The 8th and 6th often indicate a level of anxiety and one of the goads to Confederation was the worry that the US (now they were done with their civil war) might try to annex the remaining British North American colonies (given their belief in US Manifest Destiny) coupled with a fear that Britain might not be willing to fund colonies defense. This may also be indicated by Jupiter, ruling the 12th (secret enemies) and 9th (foreign commerce) in the 12th in close opposition to Mars with Neptune (scandal, schemes, unrest) also in the 12th conjunct the Asc.

Mars is in her joy in the 6th so perhaps the public felt the act of parliament joining the colonies under one government was a step in securing their safety. Pluto in the 1st points to an urge to cooperate with one another for financial reasons (8th, Pluto in Taurus). Although it is unlikely that everyone was happy, and some may have felt they were coerced into cooperating.

This might also be indicated by Capricorn on the 10th (the administration and Prime Minister, monarch) with Saturn retrograde in Scorpio in the 7th of open enemies; an indication the possibility of war was on the minds of those running the show with an eye out for business concerns (Capricorn). Saturn opposes Pluto in the 1st, an indication the deal may have been forced on the colonial residents most likely for what appeared to be practical reasons (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo earth emphasis).

If we look at the Moon, who also represents the condition of the people in general (or, if Greer's observations are accurate, the people who make up the political class) we can see it's in the 3rd (neighbouring countries, documents, communication, transportation) in Gemini reinforcing the idea that the people's minds were on the neighbouring US. Interestingly, the Moon is void and about to enter her domicile, Cancer, the sign concerned with domestic affairs and on the 4th house of home and country.

The Sun conjunct Uranus on the cusp of the 4th in opposition to the MC could indicate a new and, for the time, unusual, form of leadership coming to power.

Looking at Carney's chart, his Mars/Moon conjunction is in Virgo in partile trine to the BNA Pluto while his Saturn in Pisces is trine (1°) the BNA Sun/Uranus conjunction in the BNA 4th. So he's connecting directly to (or responding to) the people (1st) and land (4th)

Looking at Poilievre's chart, his Uranus is partile conjunct BNA Saturn in the BNA 7th; his Saturn in Virgo is partile opposite the BNA Jupiter in Pisces in the 12th; his Jupiter in Leo is semi-sextile BNA Mars in Virgo in the BNA 6th. So he's connecting to (or responding to) open enemies (7th) and secret enemies (12th) with a weak connection people's work (6th).

Won't have time to check the Constitution chart or Ingress charts until some time next week. Looking forward to seeing your read on them.
