My understanding is that in questions of this type the main thing to look for would be an aspect from the ruler of the 8th, or planets in the 8th, to the ruler of the first, perhaps the ascendant, or the Moon.

I wonder, though, if an aspect from any of the 8th house factors to the second, or ruler thereof, would also work? Would this not symbolize what is, for practical purposes, the other persons money, returning to me and once again becoming my money?

I think that's probably a valid consideration, if the significator of the 8th is applying favourably to the significator of the 2nd. I would still look more for application and/or reception between the 8th and the 1st, being that the money should be coming to *you*. Perhaps a good relationship between all three (1st, 2nd and 8th) would be ideal.
