I'm not sure where to find the reason 'why' he isn't calling - can anyone help?

The chart has no considerations before judgement apart from the Moon in the Via Combusta.

Background: The querent hasn't heard from her boyfriend for two weeks after he got angry with her and told her not to call anymore due to her being unavailable due to work committements when he tried to call her previously. He did ring her in the following few days after he said that but she wouldn't answer and now he's stopped calling so she asked:

Why isn't he calling? When will I hear from him?

The ascendent is at 10 degrees Virgo so she is ruled by Mercury, Venus and the Moon as it is basically a relationship question and he is ruled by Jupiter ruler of the 7th house and the Sun.

Venus rules her 3rd house - communication and Mars rules his 3rd (turned 9th). Moon applies by trine to Mars - he will contact her in about 4 and a half units of time.

Mercury is in the 7th house disposited by Jupiter so she is really interested in him and recently separated from Uranus which possibly shows their sudden separation. The Moon is Via Combusta which is within 5 degrees of her 3rd house cusp showing her distress at the lack of communication...? She seems more interested in him when looking at the receptions than he is with her at the moment.

Jupiter is in first station which is a great weakness and about to turn retrograde in the 4th house (his turned 10th). I'm not sure how to apply this to the question but this must be the reason. She will more than likely hear from him at some point as his planet is retrograding and will come back. The Sun is in the 8th house ruled by Mars and is separating from an opposition with the Moon and The Moon has also separated from a sextile with Jupiter - this was their last contact. There is an applying square aspect between Mercury and Jupiter in 0 deg 56' - so I think some form of contact will be made - how long I have no idea!

Just a few suggestions. I usually, give primary attention the the main significators and the Moon in relationship questions. Whether to use natural significators (Venus & the Sun) is a personal choice but I would suggest leaving these out until you have formed a view on what Lord 1, 7 and the Moon are saying to you. Otherwise it can get somewhat confusing.

In this chart Mercury and Jupiter are imminently going to form a square. So the querant will be in touch with her boyfriend but not without some difficulty. The applying aspect is just less than a degree. In terms of time that could symbolise just under a month.

I wouldn't give as much weight to the Moon being in the via combusta here as it is about to conjunct the highly auspicious fixed star Spica. Its also disposited by Venus. The Moon is separating from Jupiter (Lord 7) and applying by trine to Lord 8 Mars. The dispositor of Mars here is Saturn. The associations of loss and distress associated with the eighth house ruler could come into play especially as Libra is the sign of detriment for Mars. Mars is also in the cadent 6th house. As you have noted Mars is the ruler of the boyfriend's turned 3rd house which implies associations of arguments. The Moon is also about to sextile Pluto.

I agree that the receptions are all in the boyfriend's favour. The querent is shown in detriment and fall in Pisces and Jupiter is the main dispositor.
This could explain his apparent wish to have easy access to the querant at work whenever he wished. On the other hand she has little or no influence on the boyfriend through reception. Indeed Sagittarius is the sign of detriment for Mercury. Also Mercury is is the 7th house house reflecting the querants focus on this relationship. The querents career is having a negative effect on her relationship as demonstrated by Mercury as Lord 10 here weakened in the 7th house. Equally, the relationship may be damaging her professional life.

The receptions don't seem to indicate the boyfriend has much interest in maintaining this relationship unless its on his terms. He is shown in a very powerful position as Jupiter in Sag in the 4th. Traditionally, a planet receiving another planet into its dignities is well disposed to that planet. However, the power imbalance here doesn't bode well for the querent having much share in the decision making in this relationship. Despite that the fact Mercury is applying to Jupiter and angular makes me think she will be the one to initiate fresh contact here.

I also wondered if the querent was planning some long distance trip? Mars is also Lord 9 here about to trine the Moon. I note that after squaring Jupiter ( Lord 7) Mercury forms a sextile with Venus in the 9th house?

One thing that worries me is the 6th house focus. Mars is in 6th house and the 6th house is disposited by Saturn which is retrograde in Leo in the 12th. I hope all this stress is not impacting on the querent's health? Both malefics are in their cadent houses of joy so that will hopefully diminish their harmful effects.

Thank you for looking at the chart. You say Jupiter is powerful in its position in the 4th house in Sagittarius but surely it being in first station about to go retrograde will weaken it? I read that 'only the strongest of extenuating circumstances will render it capable of action at such times'. I am wondering whether Jupiter in the turned 10th house - his work is causing the problem as Mars also rules his 2nd house (8th) - his money. As Mars (his money) is disposited by Saturn (his wages) turned 11th - that it is possible he has lost his job and therefore has no money to make calls - Jupiter separating from a trine with Saturn? (he only uses a mobile and had been complaining he was stretched money wise and finding it difficult to make ends meet, his girlfriend always returned his calls he never talked to her on his credit). She was adamant at the time of asking the question she would not be calling him under any circumstances due to him telling her to never call again!

The power imbalance is interesting as it is him that has kept it going not her but it was always on his terms and she has been trying to shift the balance more in her favour and not to be at his beck and call all the time. She did get into trouble at work for the many calls she received from him during her working day and never for anything important. I think this is why she is surprised he has managed not to call for two weeks when she was used to up to 10 calls a day - its just out of his character.

I will ask about the travel the next time I speak with her.

By referring to Jupiter as extremely strong I was mostly just emphasising the essential dignity of Jupiter in Sagittarius compared to the debility of Mercury in Pisces in terms of its detriment and fall in that sign.

The retrograde motion is some way off in terms of the action of this chart. In particular the Moons next aspect and the main significators perfect with Jupiter still stationary. I do agree the stationary Jupiter is worth examining.

Deb states the following about stationary planets:

'Stationary planets have the luxury of time to express their influence and this can make them a very powerful and potentially destructive force. This is especially so with planets that are turning from direct to retrograde motion. Such planets are said to bring delays, damage, reversals of fortune, and dissolution'. (Deborah Houlding, student notes-Professional Horary Astrology Certificate Course).

As Jupiter is so strongly benefic here I would expect the negative effects to be less marked here. However, it possibly indicates the boyfriend taking time out to re-evaluate his position in relation to this relationship.

When it occurs, retrograde motion clearly slows things down indicating delays or even blocking an event entirely. The symbolic meaning of the backward flow of a planet suggests the need to return to a previous situation or past event in order to bring completion to a matter that is preventing one of the partners signified by a planet move forward into a new set of circumstances.

However, in this chart Jupiter's shift to retrograde motion happens well after the main significators have come together. I wouldn't generally examine a planet's motion after perfection has already occured. The big exception is the Moon due to its fast motion and its role as a general significator as the flow of the events relating to the question.

Nevertheless, lets take a look at things from the point Jupiter goes retrograde as you suggest. By that time ( 2.22am on the 6th) the Moon is at 22'12 Scorpio, and Mercury is at 22'21 Pisces. The Moon is therefore just about to trine Mercury. However, I wouldn't consider this a relevant factor in this judgement as the Moon goes void of course well before this. Although Lilly did look at planets applying aspects across the sign boundary ( using moeity orbs) the Moon makes no more applying aspects in Libra after separating from Mars and is therefore void of course at this point unless you count Pluto. Even then the Moon will leave Libra void of course after separating from Pluto.

I have been considering your point about the querent saying she will not initiate contact again after the last communication with her boyfriend.

I had assumed the initiative would come from her because her significator is angular and the faster moving planet in the applying aspect. While his significator is angular too the stationary situation, and slower moving nature of Jupiter made it hard to imagine him taking the initiative.

However, one other thing about this aspect is that its a dexter square. In other words the faster moving planet is aspecting a planet behind it in terms of the order of signs. Traditionally, this makes the aspect more favourable. This is due to the fact that classical astrologers regarded the diurnal motion of the planets rather than the celestial order of signs as key. In terms of diurnal motion therefore Mercury is in a 'natural' dexter square.

More relevantly, to this question however, I notice Olivia Barclay stated the following in regards this issue:

'There is a good deal of difference between the meaning of sinister and dexter. Nowadays they seem unpopular, perhaps, because a dexter aspect implies that the thing happens to you , rather than you make it happen; there is more force of circumstance, it is more of a fatality'

I assume the logic for is that a dexter aspect is following the natural order of diurnal movement whereas in a sinister aspect we go against the natural flow of events.

Its interesting that in terms of diurnal movement both the Moon and the boyfriend's significator are both 'below the earth'. Perhaps indicating the difficulty of fathoming the boyfriend's intentions here.

One other thing I have noticed is that the Moon is slow in motion here too. All adding to the sense of delay, associated with this chart.

The querent rang to tell me her boyfriend phoned her today and the reason he hadn't rung was because he had no credit on his phone and was somewhat surprised she hadn't called him as it had been the longest time they had ever not spoken! He also old her he is currently in 'limbo' waiting for news of a job next week.

With the benefit of horary hindsight that fits well with the Moon separating from Jupiter and applying slow in motion to his 3rd house ruler (Mars).

I probably gave too much focus to planetary signification in her chart rather than his derived houses since his perspective was the question here.
