Antiscion

1
Since there was some question about this on another thread I decide to post an explanation here. Antiscia (plural) sometimes called solstice points, are those points that are equidistant from the Cancer - Capricorn Axis. Each degree of each sign has an antiscion (singluar) point and its opposite the contra antiscion. Solar Fire and Janus calculate these for you, and I'm sure other astrology programs do so as well.
The following table lists the signs and the sign that holds the antiscia for that sign.

Gemini - Cancer
Leo - Taurus
Virgo - Aries
Libra - Pisces
Scorpio - Aquarius
Sagittarius - Capricorn

Example: a chart has a planet in Scorpio and a planet in Aquarius. There is a possibility that they are on each others antiscion. How do we know? Add up the degrees. If the degrees equal close to 30 (two degrees is an oft cited maximum orb) each planet is on the antiscia of the other. So Moon at 12 Pisces and Mars on 18 Libra (18 + 12 = 30) they are connected, but how?

The antiscion point is a shadow of the planet in question. It is something behind the scenes not so obvious or not obvious by other techniques. We might find a planet well placed in a chart that does not seem to be working as well as we might expect, and then discover that the planet is on the antiscion of a nasty malefic. Roughly speaking a planet on another's antiscion is like a conjunction. A planet on another's contra-antiscion is like an opposition.

Other planets are not required either. The antiscion point is the alternative placement of the planet or the planet's shadow. Morin used to direct to antiscion, i.e. if Venus was at 10 Leo and the ASC was directed to 20 Taurus, he would look at this as a direction to Venus despite there being no planet at 20 Taurus.

It sounds crazy and almost like a modern technique, but it isn't, and many astrologers find it has value.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the explanation. Will try to look at some historical figures to see how the transits work out when forming a conjunction to the antiscia points in the natal chart.

Best Wishes

Hi Tom :D It's a nice topic! :'

Let's measure. Antiscion is like conjunction, but not so strong, is it. Ancient authorities said that planet in its own face or term is like if it is in his own sign, but is it? The mediaeval authors wrote these are not equal dignities. So in own sign 5 points, exaltation 4, triplicity 3, term 2, face 1.

I think the scheme for conjunction and aspects is a similar one. For exaple I should give them such points: Conjunction 5 points, opposition 4, square & trine 3, sextile 2, antiscion & paralllel only 1 point (someone would add quincunx, semisextile and others to the last group).

In this post my primary concern is antiscia. There are lots of things going on in these charts that I?m overlooking (but not everything) in order to concentrate on antiscia. There is lots of good stuff in the solar and lunar returns. In The Astrologer?s Apprentice issue No. 16, John Frawley wrote that antiscia often play a role in charts associated with death. I found such a chart (right away. This is the first chart I looked at and I stuck with it), but I have to admit I?m struggling a bit with the symbolism, but I thought I?d post the example anyway. The idea is to show how antiscion can be used while admitting this may not be the most spectacular example. If someone spots things I?m missing, please post the information.

Mansfield was one of the ?Blonde Bombshells spawned by the Marilyn Monroe phenomenon in the 1950s, although Jean Harlow (1911 ? 1937) predated both of them, and she died even younger than they did. Mansfield was killed in an automobile accident in 1967. Her nativity does not contain the more obvious significations of early death, e.g. Lord 1 in 8 or Lord 1 seriously afflicted by nasty malefics. Out-of sign aspect fans will note the Mars at 1 Virgo opposed to the Moon at 29 Aquarius. I do note that Mars is on the antiscion of the natal Sun, and Mars rules the 6th house of accidents. By itself this is not strong testimony.

In the nativity, Jupiter, in detriment in Virgo and at the bottom of the chart has his antiscion point at 16 Aries 27. There is a somewhat tenuous association of the 4th house with endings and death*. Jupiter does rule the intercepted Pisces in the 6th house of accidents, but we don?t usually associate Jupiter with death, if he doesn?t at least rule the 8th or the ASC. He is the exaltation ruler of the natal ASC, however, and exaltation is a repeating theme in the charts that follow. I ran a secondary progressed chart using Solar Fire, for June 29, 1967, the date Mansfield died. In that chart 0 Leo rises and 16 Aries is on the MC, the signs ruled by the Sun and Mars. The progressed chart for June 29, 1967, shows the Progressed MC at 16 Aries 28, a one-minute difference from natal Jupiter?s antiscion. In other words when the progressed MC hit Jupiter?s antiscion point, Mansfield died.

By itself having the progressed MC on Jupiter?s antiscion and the antiscion of the 4th cusp isn?t enough to indicate death. The chart has a few other indications. The Moon, the ruler of her natal ASC is conjunct the fixed star Algol in the progressed chart, so is progressed Mercury, Lord of the natal IC and Jupiter. Mercury also rules the part of death at 1 Gemini. Although the cause of death was head injuries, the rumored persisted for years that Mansfield was decapitated. This isn?t true. She was wearing a blonde wig that flew off when the car hit a slow moving tractor trailer. The wig was misidentified as her head in photographs.

If we cast the 1967 solar return for New Orleans, which is near the site of the accident, Algol is on her SR MC, and her natal Moon is setting in the New Orleans SR chart. SR Mars (accidents) is on the antiscion of the natal Sun (life force). The only other antiscion I spotted is the SR Moon on the antiscion of the natal POF. The POF is associated with the body, but this doesn?t qualify as strong testimony.

The solar return for the birthplace is of interest. 13 Virgo rises; this is the natal 4th house cusp and position of natal Jupiter. Therefore the ASC of the birth place solar return has as its antiscion point the MC of the progressed chart.

The Lunar return cast for the birthplace has the Virgo-Pisces on the ASC ? DSC axis as does the solar return cast for the same place. Curiously, at least I?m curious, the ASC ? (25 Leo) of the New Orleans lunar return is on the antiscion of the natal POF.

At the time of her death, Mansfield?s natal 8th cusp was on the MC at the place of her death.

There may be more here for interested students.

? ?4th House:: ? ? the process of death and funerals.? - Deb Houlding The Houses Temples of the Sky
? ?It [the fourth place] makes the familiar outcomes in old age whenever the chart should be taken at birth.? (i.e. in a natal chart the 4th place indicates the usual outcomes in old age). Late Classical Astrology: Paulus Alexandrinus and Olympiodorus? translator: Dorian Greenbaum.

These are all secondary considerations. The fourth house or place is primarily give to the parents, the land, the estate of the father, etc. There is an association of the 4th with old age, but Mansfield died when she was 34, hardly old age even in the times the older texts were written.
