Planetary Speed and Timing 1 by AquarianEssence Hello all, I've been working with planetary speed according to Lily. I have seen the timing change from assumed months, according to the proper timing condidering the sign and house, to weeks when moving 33% faster than mean according to what he lists as the fastest. But, in looking more closely at the speed through out a whole year, I see his numbers aren't correct. For example, he states that the mean speed of Mercury is 59'8", moving as fast as 1*40'. But I see looking at all of 2008, his speed ranges from as slow as 0*1'53" to 2*07'59". This is quit a bit faster than Lily says. So, my questions are, was it lack of technology or has it changed since then? Also, is there an accurate mean speed already calculated somewhere I can find or do I have to go through the tedious calculations to find the mean? I would have to do it by hand because I can't get the online ephemeris to past into a spreadsheet correctly to put the formula in for just the speed. It won't paste into separate cells. None of the astrology software I have will give me an ephemeris that includes speed either so the online version is all I have to work with. I am pretty good with timing usually but I need to fine tune the adjustments for faster or slower than mean. I'm wondering if I might even see months become minutes when he is at top speed. Thanks in advance for any insight, Connie Quote Tue Mar 11, 2008 1:22 pm
by cosmicdolphin Hi Connie Try astrowin.. it is a free software .. it shows you speed of the planets cheers CD Quote Tue Mar 11, 2008 6:55 pm
by AquarianEssence Thanks. I have both Winstar and Kepler that tell me the speed at any given time. But that doesn't tell me the mean speed for each. That will require adding the speed for each day for a long period of time then dividing by that number of days unless someone already knows the true mean. I guess that's what I'll have to do. I'd still like to know why Lily would be over half a degree per day off on Mercury's fastest speed though. I didn't expect that. Quote Tue Mar 11, 2008 10:34 pm

by Deb Hi Connie This is a good question. We have a list of average speeds onsite at http://www.skyscript.co.uk/gl/slow.html But I don?t remember where that information came from, and wherever it did come from, it would have been taken at trust. I don?t know of anyone that has actually bothered to check these average speeds over long periods of time. I don?t doubt your word, but can you tell me when this year Mercury moves as quickly as you say it does? It makes the remark in Lilly curious, as you say, though he was an astrologer, not an astronomer, so probably took the information on trust too. I?ll keep an eye out if I see this sort of information in any of his sources. Deb Quote Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:23 am
by AquarianEssence Good morning, Here http://www.megadelfi.com/~jonathan/eph2 ... B=on&0y=on is Johnathan Dunn's ephemeris generator where you can see all the forms of planetary speed. It is the true speed that I will refer to. From April 11-27 Mercury will be over 2*/day. This is also true of longitude and latitude speed. This occurs again July 20- Aug. 3. I have a note out to Johathan to see if he knows the true mean. Otherwise I'll have to do a huge amount of data entry to calculate by hand because now, I just have to know. CosmicDolphin, as for Astrowin, Astro123, I have the software but the only thing I see there for planetary speed is the rating for a natal input, not actual speed nor true mean. The ephemeris doesn't even have speed that I can find. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but I've searched through every menu. Connie Quote Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:44 am
by cosmicdolphin Connie That link Deb gave is fantastic .. i completely forgot about it the one i am talking about is in AstroWin. I dont know the version .. i cant remember buit it is in natal info cheers CD Quote Wed Mar 12, 2008 5:57 pm
by AquarianEssence CosmicDolphin, that isn't the speed of the planet it is a rating they give it according to the norm and importance in the chart. For example it lists my Sun speed calculation as 3. The Sun never moves 3 of anything per day. My natal Sun speed is 58'/day which slower than its norm of 59'/day. Mercury who is rather fast at 1*43'/day they rate with a 5. So you see it isnt' the actual speed and doesn't tell the mean either. Thank you though. I hadn't looked at that software for a really long time and it does something I'd forgotten about. Regards, Connie Quote Wed Mar 12, 2008 9:19 pm
by cosmicdolphin Connie this is what i know If it is not in AstroWin, the only way to calculate the speed is taking the planet at midnight of the following day and subtracting from midnight of the previos day and compare it with the following day i know that planet is slower when it is coming in or out of retrograde which software has the daily planet speed, and at what rate i dont know. I could have sworn Astrowin has it.. I am just trying to come up with a solution for you these are the average moon - 13 deg 10 min 16 sec merc - 0 59 08 venus - 0'59'08 sun - 0'59'08 mars - 0'31'27 jupiter-0'04'59 saturn- 0'02'01 does this help a bit? 10 by cosmicdolphin ohh Connie My friends pointed to the right direction .. I am soo blind do you have Solar Fire? I dont have Keptler but wherever you see travel speed, you will see if the planet is slow or fast .. compare it with the average cheers CD Quote Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:15 am
by cosmicdolphin EUREKA! I found it! god, i lov my sun/uranus conjunction okay load up your astrowin pick a chart click on data on very top mouse over at Natal Now, do you see 3rd from the bottom says Basics click on it you will see Speed and Rate lemme know cheers CD Quote Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:01 am
by AquarianEssence I made sure I have the most recent version of Astrowin, it's v. 3.61. There is nothing that says basics anywhere to be found. But even if I could find it, this would only tell me speed for that day. That isn't what I want. Even if it has the mean listed it won't tell me the author isn't simply using someone elses numbers such as Lily''s, which I know believe is in error. I think I will just have to add each day's speed for a whole cycle or year, then divide by that number of days to find the mean. You see, I am looking for the true actual average, fastest and slowest each body moves per day in order to more finely tune my timings in horary. I can easily see the speed for any given day through a chart cast in my software or with the online ephemeris. But this doesn't tell me the true mean motion/day. Quote Thu Mar 13, 2008 10:10 am
