I've just applied for a position that I'm hoping I'll get, as it's nearly perfect for me.

Virgo rises, and Gemini rules the 10th cusp, so I have given the job to Mercury and taken the Moon for myself.

The job is obviously brill: approaching the 10th angle from the 9th (the job is in the UK, so I will have to move there) and newly in domicile. It's not quite conjunct the angle yet, with 6 degrees to reach the MC.

Now, Mercury squares the Ascendant but from domicile and exaltation. I could interpret this as some difficulties involved in getting it (?)

I'm not sure whether to put the Moon in the 8th or 7th, as it's on the cusp. Of course I'd like to put it in the angular house! The Moon applies to sextile the MC, which I would take as a positive sign.

BUT, Mercury's next aspect will be to square Saturn in the 12th, so this is what I don't get. Saturn is in the sign of Mercury's exaltation, Virgo, and so I'm unsure as to whether Saturn can just be viewed as some difficulties and delays in getting the job, or if it negates getting the job at all. Why the reception, I wonder? Saturn is also stationary and about to turn direct...surely this means something, yes? I just don't know what...

Any ideas, anyone? I promise my feelings won't be hurt!

I have drawn up your chart, and to answer your question about the moon's placement I see the cusp of the eighth house is 4.18 Aries (using the placidus House System) and the moon at 6.00 Aries so I see the moon is inside the eighth.
Mercury's position at 00.04 Gemini may reflect your early concerns about the matter, but I note you are six degrees of separation from the job at the MC of your chart.
Taking you to be the moon, you are concerning yourself with the financial resources of your employer-to-be, and technically this moon is void.
The point of the MC (if we are taking this for the position itself) moves faster than the moon, and has already sextiled the moon.This can relate to you becoming aware of the position.Something that happened a very short time ago.
The ending of the matter is signified by the cusp of house four.Jupiter is ruling that house.
Jupiter is in your fifth house, of your children or romantic partner.(jupiter is also ruling the seventh house).
Jupiter is in the sign of saturn and receives no dignities by sign or house and slowing down to station soon.
Saturn is close to the ascendant, so it is a weighty decision.Saturn is not making any aspects so when I consider all these factors I am very sorry to say that the position will not be taken up by you.

Thank you for looking at my chart.

For the Moon on the cusp I was considering the use of the 'five degree rule': when a planet is within 5 degrees of the cusp (Regiomontanus houses) you give the planet to the next house along. I'm just unsure whether this rule applies to the sinister direction or the dexter direction.

What makes this chart sticky for me are the receptions: everything apart from the Moon is Mercury-ruled in some fashion, so surely this has some significance apart from 'you won't get the job'...? The way I've broken it down is:

Moon passed aspect to Mercury = 'no'
Moon sextiles MC = 'yes, possibly'
Mercury square ascendant = 'no'
Mercury square Saturn = 'no'

BUT:

Mercury is ascendant ruler as well as job ruler, so reception by domicile = 'possibly'
Mercury received by Saturn in exaltation = 'possibly'.

It's these things I want to understand, whether I get the job or not!

I make your chart 8 deg 26 Virgo rising and the 8th cusp 4 deg 09 Aries and you the Moon @ 6Aries02 Regiomontanus. So no question it is any other house than 8. The 5 deg thing is applied to sinister application only Gunhilde.

Moon and Mercury have no applying aspect and no reception, boo hoo.
I can't see you getting the job.

Yes, thanks, I've already figured that out! I'm not really asking for answers on whether or not I'll get the job; it's a bigger question than that.

My question is about receptions and their effect. What, if anything, does a significator squaring its own angle from domicile and/or exaltation mean?

Is a generally prohibitive aspect to Saturn mitigated by the fact that there is positive reception?

I am using the example of this chart to examine these sorts of things for future cases where I run into them. So, any analyses and/or ideas about these sorts of squares-with-reception will be welcome.

Even Lilly says that a square with reception doesn't always mean a simple 'no'. It can mean that a matter is brought about but with great effort. In this case, the Moon sextiles the 10th angle with no reception, but Mercury squares Saturn *with* reception.

I am just wondering what the 'great effort' would mean in a situation like this chart, especially since Saturn is in the 12th. Would it mean, say, that the job isn't worth the effort? Or that effort needed to get the job, takes away from the job itself? ..Something like that...

Hi there!

I run your chart and,according to Masha?allah, as the ruler of the ASC is in aspect with the ASC , he is your significator. The Moon is secondary.
She doens?t aspects the ASC being in the 8th house, showing your anguish. Her next aspect is with Jupiter. Jupiter doesn?t receives the Moon, so the Moon is impeded.
It?s true Mercury will do a square with Saturn in the 12th house,( even if it?s in the first sign) but, as you said and the ancients agree, the reception can?t harm. What is happening? Mercury, you, receives Saturn by rulership. So, you allow Saturn, the ruler of the 5th and 6th, and of the 8th derivated ( the employer money) and of the 9th derivated ( voyages) to act.
You will get the job, with restrains, given by Saturn, and obstacles due to the square with Saturn: may be it will be necessary to restrain your pleasures ( 5th) and liberty( Saturn in the 12th).

Bonatti in his 125th Consideration, page 327 of " Book of Astronomy" translated by Ben Dykes says:
" The 125th Consideration is that you look to see, in nativities or questions, what sign is ascending: if it were the sign of a planet having two domiciles, the native or querent will be engaged in those things which are ignified by the other domicile of that planet, and its accidents will happen to him easily, and he himself will be the reason why they will happens to him"

The Pars of Fortune in Leo receives a sextile of Mercury, another good indication. The Pars is ruled by the Sun in the 9th of voyages and studies, and the Sun is received by Venus in her domicile, also in the 9th. Money and voyage are linked because Venus rules the 2nd.
Venus, the hour ruler, is in the 10th of the Fortune, domiciliate.Good indication for you!
Mercury, your ruler, is strong by sign and fit to the 10th. He is conjoined with Alcyone . Alcyone is a star representative of the Pleiades, and if well connected, points to ambition and endeavour resulting in being favoured and attaining honour and glory. If badly connected can be associated with injuries to the head, face or eyes.
Mercury is strong pointing to good results, but the square with Saturn can represent some danger. In my opinion Saturn can?t harm you because the reception.
My conclusion is that you will get the job with struggles in 6 units of time from the time of the question.

I would go with Clelia's signifactions for Saturn.
Saturn is 9th lord from 10th(Occupation overseas).The stationary situation from being retrograde denotes that you are planning to go back(If I remember correctly, you were in UK sometime back- so,strangely, this would be the end of that retrogression !!).

The problem could be with Employment conditions(?6th house) and Visa. These days with Britain wanting to be European , the employer would need to certify that this job cannot be filled with an EU candidate.

I won't have trouble with a visa (at least, I shouldn't): I'm already legal to work in the UK (and have been for about 13 years now!). I was actually up for citizenship when we left the UK last year. Foolish me. Should have stayed.

Employment conditions may be something, however. This job would require a good amount of commuting from the place we're planning to live.

We shall wait and see. I have an interview with another place being set up.
