The Scottish Astrological Association are hosting a one day event on Chinese Lunar Mansions with Derek Walters in Edinburgh on Saturday November 1st this year. Derek is the leading international authority on this subject.

Workshop Description

Chinese astronomer-astrologers were studying the skies thousands of years before the invention of the popular animal names of the now familiar Chinese zodiac. Four giant seasonal constellations were each divided into seven segments, producing what the poet Chaucer in the Franklin's Tale called the '28 mansions of the Moon'. These plotted the paths of the Moon, Sun and planets through the sky, and any unusual astronomical events, particularly eclipses, were duly noted in the official records. The Court Astrologer would then pronounce his opinions on the significance of these events, from impending catastrophes to times of celebration.

Today Chinese astrologers predict a person's characteristics and fortunes through life by the lunar mansion of the birthdate; fengshui masters calculate auspicious directions from the lunar mansions inscribed on the Chinese compass (the Luopan); while astronomers and researchers are able to define precise historical dates from references to the lunar mansions in ancient texts.

Derek Walters is a world authority on this subject and has been frequently invited to speak on this and related topics in China and throughout the world. As the author of several books on Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui Derek is probably best known for his book ?The Complete Guide to Chinese Astrology?.

This workshop represents a unique opportunity to find out about one of the oldest systems of astronomy and astrology in the world from the leading international authority.

It sounds a great event. I?ll be away on that date but I wanted to add a note to recommend that UK and European astrologers think seriously about the prospect of travelling up to Edinburgh for this. As you know ? because you are coming yourself ? I have been helping to organise an event at Nottingham with Ben Dykes. It is still early days but the bookings so far have been decent. The interesting thing is that most people that have so far booked are coming a considerable distance to attend. With regional airlines offering deals of not only free flights, but sometimes free flights with no fees or taxes either, the prospect of visiting places like Nottingham (East Mids airport) or Edinburgh to attend a one day astrology event is no longer bizarre. The same applies to other cities too. I recently booked a return flight to Dublin on a Ryanair special deal that cost a grand total of 2p (1p there and 1p back). It was hand luggage only so it was a quick online check-in with no extra costs for taxes or fees? but then they went and spoiled it by forcing me to pay a ?4.50 credit card fee. (So of course I complained for days about that). It?s a strange situation nowadays because it can work out cheaper to travel to another city (or even country) and back again, than it can cost to get a taxi home from a local night out!

The horse and coach service has sadly stopped now but the train between Edinburgh and London is just over 4 hours these days from city centre to city centre.
