In a curious way this quake seems to be related to the historical quake that recently occured West of Spitzbergen on March 7. and which was again related to the quake of Feb.21 2008

Last night's Italy quake shows the Midheaven at 23SC36, square the Midheaven of the Spittzbergen quake March 7. where the MC was 22AQ31. During the recent quake in Italy the Moon was 1VI27 which coincides with the lunar eclipse of Feb. 21 2008 at 1VI53, which was accompanied by a significant earthquake of 6,0 Richter and that probably initiates the sequence.

Gamma (?) Aquila, Tarazed, is a pale orange third magnitude star in the back of the Eagle, lying north of Altair.

Tarazed, or Tarazad, from the Persian title, [according to Wikipedia it is derived from Persian term ??hin tar?zu meaning "the beam of the scale", referring to an asterism of ?, ? and ? Aquilla]. I have not yet checked any chart for the earthquake, so I don't know if Eagle is rising. Would it be proper, true?
But I believe you are right, stars connected with fixed signs are very violent in nature, especially in Manilius.

That is certainly very interesting on the star Tarazed being close to the ascendant. Although at 1 Aquarius it is a couple of degrees away. Ptolemy suggested the star is of the nature of Mars and Jupiter. However, the imagery of the the constellation of Aquila rising is a fascinating piece of synchronicity.

However, in terms of such a violent and destructive event I feel the star close to the MC is even more revealing here. This is Unukalhai known as Cor Serpentis or 'The Heart of the Serpent'. This one is a real nasty and according to Robson:

''A pale yellow star situated on the neck of the Serpent. From Unk al Hayyah, the Neck of the Snake. Sometimes called Cor Serpentis, the Serpent's Heart (a snake's heart is located in its neck).

....Influences: According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Saturn and Mars; It gives immorality, accidents, violence and danger of poison.

...In the Neck of the Serpent (Serpens), Unukalhai shows its properties as a Martian force combined with Saturn and is often really dangerous and destructive. '' [Robson, p.213.]

It is noteable that two predominantly Martian stars are linked to the angles of the chart. (Nb: Fixed stars frequently have joint associations with planets. However, the first referenced planet is the predominant one in describing a star's nature.)

As you can see in those cycles Mars, Saturn Neptune and Pluto are the dominant planets, very close to the angles. If you have Solar Fire it is very easy to create those charts.

Yes, still just in longitude Altair is very far from Ascendant at 3:32.

the only thing I found on the Dsc was Aludra, which brings fear of the night, certainly plausible for this instance.

But I dont think it is a coincidence that the eagle was rising when the city named the eagle was struck by earthquake. Even if only it is saying, this is what the story is about...

also we have most of the planets between the IC and the AC in this chart.

Jupiter is aligned with Castra

Castra means a "Military camp" or "fortress".

The constellation Capricorn has a great influence over human affairs portending major changes in such areas as climate and political customs. Mars is ON the 2nd house cusp, which in mundane astrology if I'm not mistaken is bad for finances...

uranus at 23 Pisces 57 is aligned with markab

Markab ? Flamsteed's Marchab ? is the Arabs' word for a Saddle, Ship, or Vehicle,? anything ridden upon,? that was early applied to this star; but they also designated it as Matn al Faras, the Horse's Withers or Shoulder, and the 17th century German astronomer Bayer cited Yed Alpheras, the Horse's Hand, or, more properly, Forearm,?the Arabian Yad.
Among astrologers it portended danger to life from cuts, or stabs, and fire [cuts and stabs can be operations nowadays]. It culminates on the 3rd of November, and when on the meridian forms, with gamma (?), the southern side of the Great Square, beta (? Scheat) and delta (?) forming the northern, and all 15? to 18? apart.
It is one of the so-called lunar stars, much observed in navigation.

To me all this says Uranus here causes falling accidents, violent death, disruption and chaos... certainly appropo

Venus is retrograde and aligned with Deneb kaitos, a star in the tail of the whale or sea monster (whack!)

Note: This star, Deneb Kaitos, ? Cetus, is listed as Difda in Robson's book Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology.

According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Saturn; and, to Alvidas, of Mars, Saturn and Mercury. It causes self-destruction by brute force, sickness, disgrace, misfortune and compulsory change. [Robson*, p.162.]

The Sun is aligned with Nodus secundus one of the kinks in the Dragons tail.

and mercury at 22aries45 is between Baiten Kaidos and Acamar which seems like redundancy as both the whale and Eridanus have already come up.

5 of the traditional 7 main planets are in houses 1 and 2, the remaining 2 are in the 7th house, though Saturn appropriately enough with all the death adn destruction is on the 8th Cusp. and moon is a few degrees behind in the 7th proper.

Saturn at 16 vir 17, aside from being conj the 8th house cusp is aligned with Alcor

In an Arabic story this star, Alcor, was the little infant in the arms of one of the "Mourners". The constellation of the Great Bear (Ursa Major) was seen as a funeral procession, around a bier or coffin. The bier was marked by the Plough or Big Dipper stars on the body of the Bear - Merak (beta), Dubhe (alpha), Phecda (gamma) and Megrez (delta). The coffin was followed by "Mourners" the three big stars on the tail of the Great Bear; epsilon (Alioth), zeta (Mizar), and eta (Alkaid). These mourners, the children of Al Na'ash, who was murdered by Al Jadi, the pole-star (Polaris), are still nightly surrounding him in their thirst for vengeance, the walidan among the daughters ? the star Mizar ? holding in her arms her new-born infant, the little Alcor. while generally I would think of this as Ursa Major, I think the mourners makes far more sense here. also the Saturn mars Opposition ought to be noted as those two are bound to cause havoc if ever they can...

and the Moon aligned with Megrez

Megrez is the star that joins the handle with the pot of the dipper, some call it the root of the tail, this is also known as shown above as the Mourners, one might say the Mother (moon) is joining in the mourners procession here.

the last planet that is not in house one or 2 is pluto, who is very close to being conj the 12th house cusp. certainly hospitals would be important here.

Pluto is closely aligned with Polis the top of Sagitarius Bow. This is generally a very favorable star, so possibly her the alignment is either, "it could have been worse" or "its benefits were reduced by pluto's alignment" I would think it would be hard to tell.

Unfortunately, I dont have the software to check for mundane star positions at present. However, I agree that is the way to go unless you have any prominent stars close in longitude and latitude to the angles, Moon or angle rulers. However, I dont think the fixed stars involved have to necessarily be that bright to have an effect. Many of the stars of Mars-Saturn nature have quite a powerful malefic influence without being especially bright.

Well as we have an exact time for the earthquake I think that is valid but I agree with you that the pre-lunation chart will be interesting to study.

Incidentally, the rising degree of this chart co-incides with the degree comet McNaught reached maximum magnitude in , in the northern hemisphere during January 2007. As this was the brightest comet for 35 years I would expect it to leave a resonance like an eclipse along such sensitive zodiacal degrees. The Mars-Saturn opposition (Ascendant/MC rulers) may be the trigger event along with the retrograde Venus in Aries (rules 4th house).

I guess if we follow traditional authorities. Its not one of the traditional ideas I have so far found that practical myself. The large number of modern countries that are excluded in traditional texts makes these associations of limited value in my opinion.

I would rather look at a pre-lunation, Ingress or a national chart.

Yes, Marco Fumagalli in CieloeTerra who wrote a couple of articles about these kind of events, says the same. But then he uses stars, not planets. I mean, lines where a certain fixed star is rising or culminating. I believe he does this by hand, I never heard there is a software which can do this.

Well, I believe that we should take the Republican one. Still there are a couple of versions, especially this one 18/06/1946 h.6:00 pm because it's the moment when the President of the Court of Cassazione read the result of the referendum- anyway I don't know which works better.

Like already has been said I too see the Mars-Saturn opposition as very significant.

Others may not agree but since I feel for Johannes Kepler's views on aspects I'd like to mention that the chart of the event has a few minor aspects. Three 150? aspects within an orb of 1?: MC-Mercury, Moon-Venus, Sun-Saturn. One 135? almost at 1?, Sun-Moon.
There are also some aspects of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

An interesting follow up to this story with the news today that six Italian seismologists have been prosecuted for manslaughter due to their failure to give an accurate risk warning on earthquake activity at L'Aquila, Italy.
