Hello,

I have read in many places i.e. in books and even here in different posts, that one of the favorite meanings of Jupiter is expansion.
Is this because Jupiter = hot + moist where both qualities expand things? If this is true, this meaning could only appear following the association of qualities and planets which is supposedly came later maybe by Ptolemy. Are there other explanations that do not depend on the qualities?

Mercury is also a planet increases but usually it increases numbers e.g. multiple marriages is indicated when the seventh house is in Gemini - at least one of the indications.
Q2: Is this true? If this is true, why then signs ruled by Mercury are opposite signs rule by Jupiter? Isn't this an indication that they should have opposite meanings? Another thing: Gemini is one of the barren signs - why then have this indication of multiple marriage when Gemini is on the 7th?

I may not be much help here, but regarding Jupiter's expansive qualities, I think it relates a lot to the sheer size of him. He's the largest planet in our solar system, and in mythology he also represents the supreme god (Zeus).

You will find in traditional texts that both the Moon and Mercury are associated with increasing numbers or adding changefulness/instability (more marriages, etc.) because they are most inferior, or swiftest of the planets. Their nature changes much based on who they aspect and perhaps their dispositors, however.

There has been a thread about Mercury in signs of Jupiter, and I think the general conclusion is that this can be quite good, especially when Jupiter is well placed (Mercury's dispositor).

Another thing: Gemini is one of the barren signs - why then have this indication of multiple marriage when Gemini is on the 7th?

I would say mutability might add instability or changefulness on 7th house matters, but marriage indicators require more than 7th house sign analysis. Mercury in a fixed sign, as well as Sun (in a woman's) or Moon (in a man's) in a fixed sign might show one marriage, even if Gemini is on the 7th cusp. For example, I believe for a woman, the number of aspects the Sun makes might show the number of marriages she might have. Gemini DSC might help describe the marriage partner, or perhaps numerous lovers, not necessarily marriage partners. Remember that the DSC is also the marriage partner's ASC in a way, so think of how that might influence what he/she looks like and the sort of personality he/she has. It's relevant in what we are attracted to also, and perhaps what we might project onto others (that is more of a modern interpretation).

Barren signs can be poor for marriage, but you must take into account all of the marriage indicators. Lilly's Christian Astrology, book III talks about some standard marriage indicators.

Just a query: When you say that the number of aspects to Sun/Moon as indicators of number of marriages, do you mean applying aspects or both applying and separating?

There are various indicators for the number of marriages, so the aspects that Moon or Sun make aren't the only considerations, but Lilly mentions that the the planet's aspect should be applying, both "plactick" and "partile." This means the Moon or Sun will apply and aspect this/these planet/planets before the sign change, most likely, so the aspect doesn't have to be within orb. Remember that is used in combo with other significators. The main significators would be the 7th ruler, planets in the 7th, Moon and Venus and their placements for men, 7th ruler, planets in the 7th, Sun and Mars and their placements for women. The sign influences would obviously be important too.

I should also have said that the barren signs may show aversion to married life, which can be of the native's choosing.

Christian Astrology, book III is free to download (I believe Deborah has a section on this site on downloadable sources) for the entire section on marriage and it's super helpful. If you can't find it on this site, you can find it through a Google search.

After reading Tanit's post yesterday I was also under the same impression...

Regarding barren indicators in marriage, please read the source I listed. Lilly talks about barren signs in regards to marriage as a separate issue from fertility (an entirely different chapter). I would post quotes, but the pdf file I downloaded doesn't allow copy/paste, so I'd have to type it myself and it would take a lot of time.

Tanit is right. Fertile/barren signs are used by Lilly and other authors in several matters, like marriage and money matters, etc.
