This question arises from the discussion elsewhere about stationary planets.
Suppose, just for example you have Mars applying to a conjunction with Saturn but before the conjunction becomes exact Mars goes stationary and then retrograde so that the conjunction never actually occurs and never occurs in the progressed chart either.
How do you interpret the natal Mars conjunct Saturn in such a case.
What about any other aspect that is applying but never becomes exact? e.g., a trine or a square that is 'promised' but never comes to completion because of Rx.

What you are asking about is described in traditional astrology as 'refranation'. Its one of a variety of ways in which the perfection of an aspect is denied.

This terminology is used especially in horary and electional astrology.
