Rare New Moon

A coincidence involving the closeness of the waxing 'new' Moon to the vernal equinox provided excellent conditions for making first observations of an early Lunar crescent on March 5. 2011. In Norway a new record was set with only 19 hours having passed from the actual New Moon. The Moon was 9 degrees separated from the Sun. This has meaning for our understanding of a planet being combust the Sun.

The lunar crescent was viewed as uneven, due to mountain tops and valleys on the Moon's surface that become visable when the light passes at such a narrow angle.
