Skyscript Astrology Forum

This index, newly updated in April 2013, includes several presentations added since the last update in September 2012, marked 'NEW'.

The first part of the index links to scans of complete out-of-copyright books or in some cases magazine articles and even correspondence.

These include the complete astrological magazines edited by Alfred Pearce ('Urania', 'The Future' and 'Star Lore and Future Events'), as well as the entire contents of both volumes of the first edition of his 'Text Book of Astrology'. Also included are G. E. Sutcliffe's 'Foundations of Physical Astrology' and Heinrich Daath's 'Astro-Physiology and Pathology', neither of which has ever been printed as a book. They were published only in serial form in the pages of 'Modern Astrology' magazine.

None of the above material has been available on the Internet previously or reprinted, and please kindly note that I reserve the exclusive right to further distribution of my page scans other than downloads for personal use, which I welcome and encourage since the default viewing resolution is low, but when the scans are downloaded and viewed offline the resolution is much higher.

The second part of the index links to outline presentations of the works of different astrological authors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, using scans from my original copies. One of these, on the works of J. Arthur Houghton, includes virtually the whole of his extremely rare 'Handbook of Astrology" (leaving out just ephemerides and similar tables).

To access most of these scans you will need to have at least one connection in common with me on Facebook, since access is limited to 'friends of friends' in nearly all cases. If this does not apply, just send me a friend request directly and I'll be happy to oblige (and even if it does, I would still be happy to oblige all genuine requests).

Some of the contents of the "Timeline Photos" album remain currently accessible to friends only. This is a result of my not currently having the time to go through and individually change the settings to the many photos added since last September in this album. It will be corrected at a later date.

Philip, this is incredibly generous of you! Thank you for being such a good friend to astrology and its rich history, and to all of us.

Astraea, thank you for the kind comments. I'm glad the effort is appreciated. Scanning pages from old books and then trimming the scans page by page is quite a tedious, delicate and time-consuming task; but it's worth it for the results, unless the books are so tightly-bound that to scan them would severely damage them.

Tom, I think you'd find there was plenty of competition for such a post. A university like Oxford would probably favour in-depth knowledge of early printed books rather than 19th and 20th century ones, and Leandro Cantamessa for one has studied the earlier ones a lot more exhaustively than I have. Besides, I think a doctorate is a prerequisite for any chair at Oxford! But still, thank you for the generous idea!

Earlier this weekend I added a 202-picture presentation on the development of Alan Leo's series of astrological text-books (1899-1913, plus the index volume of 1917), which is found here:

Margherita has already seen it, but I hope this will be of some historical interest to others too, even though these works by Alan Leo are generically very well-known, having been reprinted many times. All the scans here are from first and early printings. My main focus has been on how the earlier books in the series themselves developed between their early editions, including changes of name in two cases; but you can also see many advertisements which show how Alan Leo advertised his other books and services at different points in time during the period covered.

I'd like to take this opportunity also to thank Mark, Mithra, Herman and Margherita for the supportive comments in this strand, which have been very encouraging and much appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, Phillip, what sort of copyright issues did you face?

Hi Waybread! There should be no copyright issues whatsoever when it comes to the reproduced texts, at least in the United States (where Facebook is based), since all of those works scanned were published before 1923 and the scans posted are my own scans from original printed copies, not reproductions of other people's (copyrightable) scans.

From later magazines (chiefly in the album 'Famous French Journal first issues 1904-68', plus a small number of books of the late 1920s) I have generally presented only covers, contents listings, advertisements and editorial statements of intent, plus occasional isolated pages. If any copyright holder should object to the reproduction of this little, I would be very surprised, but would naturally oblige any valid request to remove content.

There are many so-called 'orphan works' from the period 1923-1950 that have been reproduced in full, and commercially, by publishers such as Kessinger. This is a lot more risky from the standpoint of copyright in the United States, and I have deliberately avoided this, restricting my coverage of works of this period to outline presentations at most.

The general rule for copyright of printed matter in the United States stipulates that anything first published not later than 31st December 1922 is copyright-free. Beyond that date, the rules change.

So far as I can recall from reading about this in detail several years ago, works first published between January 1st 1923 and December 31st 1963 will remain copyrighted until 95 years after first publication if their copyright was renewed after 28 years of first printing. Thus, works first published in 1923 whose copyright was renewed in 1951 will remain copyrighted up to 2018, while those first published in 1939 whose copyright was renewed in 1967 will remain copyrighted up to 2034.

Again, so far as I can recall, works first published on or after January 1st 1964 are copyrighted until 70 years after the author's death. Thus, if the author of a book published in 1964 died in 2011, the book would remain copyrighted until 2081.

Thanks, Philip! It looks like you've done the homework.

I asked because in the past I've requested copyright release permission, or had others request it from me. Usually there's no problem, but sometimes there are forms to sign or stipulations to meet. In a couple of cases the proprietors I tried to work with simply stopped corresponding or never replied. This was really frustrating.

I really appreciate people like yourself who go to the trouble to make hard-to-find or very expensive works available on the Internet in keeping with copyright considerations.
