According to David Frawley, in his book, The Astrology of the Seers: A Guide to Vedic (Hindu) Astrology, it is "much like the Tenth house in meaning. It should be examined along with it and the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, and the lord of the Tenth."
I have been able to determine the type of career from the dashamsha, but only if the birthtime is "correct."

Generally, you look for the secondary strength of a natal chart lord in a divisional chart and the relative positions of. Period and sub period lords in divisional charts.
So, if Leo is in 10 the house in natal.
Look for the strength of asc lord Mars and 10th lord sun in the D10 chart.
If there is sun major and Mars sub period running look if they have 6/8/12 relation to each other in natal or D10 chart.
Try out the charts of India Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi or your local national leader.
Now, cheer up, just one miserable Jyotishi like me would be enough to make you averse to Jyotisha and that should be enough

Profession: Business or Job or both
10 house is considered as the key factor to have look on profession. Along with 10th house, Moon (Mentality), 6th (Job) & 7th (Business) house and Dasas should be given importance. If Moon is weak.. such person keep on changing Profession (Employer or Field). Strong 7th house support Business. Strong 6th house support Job. Here, Dasas paly vital role, which keep on influecing the track of profession.
Dasmansa (D10) Chart is used to narrow the options of profession. It is observed in every 2 or 3 case, what the native have studies for professional purposes, he is found doing Job or business of different nature. This happens because of Weak Moon and Weak Dasa lords. In D10 Chart, ascendant should be checked for native's skills and knowledge. [/code]

Do not forget the slight difference between KP and Lahiri.
The change in dasamsa may help you chose the correct ayanamsha.
