For the past year or so, due to some social complications, my reputation has taken an undeserved beating. However I was puzzled as to why this was because the only major transit activity in my chart was saturn transiting the 10th house, and the only aspects he was making were numerous sextiles. That being said, I literally just realized that not only can natal aspects from signs of long/short ascension be "changed", but also transits can plausibly be affected as well. (I am already well aware that saturn aspects whether hard or soft are not easy to deal with, but given the jarringly unexpected hatred I have experienced from people this year, I just don't feel that all that could be the result of saturn merely making sextiles to my other planets, on the contrary it has a distinct "square" feeling to it.) So yeah, this is my own anecdotal evidence of how transits specifically are effected by long/short ascension signs. If anyone else has experiences to add, please do so.

As this is the traditional forum, it may be appropriate to note that a more traditional approach would be first to look at your current (primary) directions, profections and revolution(s), and only then to the transits -- including, and perhaps even predominantly, transits to directed and profected places rather than to the radix.

If I may add to Martin's observations: Saturn transiting through the four quadrants of our charts does not need to make any aspect at all to make us experience his "reality check" experience.

I am aware that this is the traditional forum, and that transits aren't as emphasized in traditional astrology, the only reason I posted my experience was to bring light to the fact that perhaps transits too can be affected by whether they are in a sign of long or short descent. I think that this is an interesting topic thats all.

What's more, what I expected this past year wasn't just generic problems with boss or with reputation, my problems this year were intimately connected to the matters of the houses ruled by the planets that were being "sextiled" by saturn.

It wasn't my intention to put you down (and I'm sorry you had a bad time of it). I just wanted to point out that the chief astrological reasons for your experiences probably are not to be found in transits to the radix, irrespective of the ascensional times of the signs involved. (Transits are nothing to do with ascensions anyway, so I doubt there's a connection there.)

Using transits as a stand-alone tool is a bit like using a clock with only a minute-hand. When the minute-hand reaches 12, it will sometimes be time for lunch and sometimes not. Without the hour-hand to help you differentiate, it's hard to tell why...

So transits have nothing to do with ascension time? I'm sorry, im astronomically (?) illiterate, so I don't know the actual mathematics behind astrology. That being said, I am curious as to why aspects in an horary chart would be affected by signs of long/short ascension but not transits. Is it because transits are playing out in real time or something?

Regarding the other methods, I had already taken them into account regarding the past year. In fact, transiting saturn is the profected ruler of my 11th house of friends, which I thought tied in neatly with all the crap that happened to me this year.

A few quick questions; what primary directions do you use? I use the ones that are available on morinus but I have never been able to correlate them with anything meaningful. (I only use the PD going forward, not converse.)

I'm mostly confused about what are directed planets, and as for transits to profected planets; do you mean where you have for instance, a natal aries sun, but in XX profected year it is profected to the sign virgo, so you should consider transits to that "imaginary" profected sun in virgo?

Personally I never consider ascensional times to modify a zodiacal aspect, not even in directions. But as far as I know, the idea comes from Ptolemy, who mentions it in passing only in the context of directions. The idea is that if the signs rise quickly, a zodiacal trine may be closer to a square in oblique ascension; if they rise slowly, a sextile may become a square.

I look at the directions of all major significators: the angles, the lights, and any planet(s) of particular relevance. I direct them through the terms (but in a sidereal zodiac) and to the classical aspects of the seven planets, in direct motion. But directions are traditionally used to see periods, not dates. The conditions of significator and promissor in the revolution and profection need to be included for a sure judgement.

Yes. The same principle applies to directions. When Morinus (or other software) shows the terms of, say, Mars in Gemini being directed 'to' your Sun, the traditional name of that direction would actually be the reverse: Sun to the terms of Mars. Symbolically, the Sun is considered to be in those terms, and any planet occupying or aspecting them in transit would be relevant to the way events unfold.
