Hi All

I am back with another perplexing question (for me) but not for this forum members. Again there may be a simple answer but I am unable to find it.

There are three harmonious aspects for the Moon: Conjunction, Trine and Sextile. I understand these. However, I cannot determine what planets (or Signs) are harmonious with the Moon! Here is what I have been able to determine:

Conjunction Harmonious:

Moon / Venus (Taurus)
Moon / Cancer
Moon / Sun

Conjunction Detrimental:

Moon / Saturn (Capricorn)
Moon / Mars (Scorpio)

However, I have not be able to determine the categorization for Mercury and Jupiter. I suspect, but really do not know. that they will be harmonious to the Moon.

Again forgive my total ignorance, but I am learning, with your help.

You may be thinking of Friendhip and enmity. See Al Biruni chap 447 where he states that moon is injurious to mars but friends with Jupiter and Venus. Readable online. Opinions differ and all factors need to be looked at. I seem to remember our Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington has moon Saturn opp. She was literally in her element as Saturn lord of the waterbearer has associations with water

I am not sure if there are planets that are harmonious or disruptive with the Moon. In Maternus's delineations, it seems to be the aspects and phases of the Moon that determines who she is "harmonious" with. Similarly with the other planetary relationships.



There are several schemes for enmity. There's the scheme based on domicile rulership, and then there is the one based on exaltation rulership. In both cases, planets managing opposite houses are enemies. The domicile rulership seems to make more sense to me. However, in the Thesaurus of Antiochus (albeit an old translation), these two schemes are explained quite well, in my opinion.

As for the scheme of friendship, I know of two schemes. First one is this. Planets that rule the same houses are friends. For example, Venus and the Moon are friends, for one is the domicile ruler of Taurus, while the other is the Exaltation ruler. Saturn and Mars are friends, since Saturn has his domicile in Capricorn while Mars exalts in it.

Anyway, these are all schemes based on planetary dignities. There is one other less rational scheme that I know of, namely Cornelius Aggripa's scheme in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy. It's not exactly traditional; I think he created it for magical procedures.



In practice, I don't think there's much use of these schemes though, except for the joint-domicile masters one.

I am rather poor, so I have only perused the free and rather hard to read translation of J. F.

In this translation, you will find the scheme in Book 1 Chapter 17, titled, aptly, "How by Enmity and Friendship the vertues of things are to be Tried and Found Out."

At one point Agrippa numbers the Moon among the friends of Saturn but a little later they have enmity as they rule opposite signs so clearly one would need to use ones own judgement in any interpretation. Will see if this is in Mr Purdue's translation later but is is not yet complete

In Antiochus's Thesaurus, the Moon opposes Saturn in the following sense: the Moon is a source of light, while Saturn is the lord of darkness. Where there is light, darkness is lessened, and vice versa.

We can clearly see this in some of the significations of both planets. The Moon brings people together; she signifies marriage, cities, gathering of crowds (Valens), similar to how a lamp in a dark place draws our attention and compels us to move towards the light. In another sense, the Moon is a life-giver, and has the ability to be the apheta/hyleg.

On the other hand, Saturn signifies limitations, restrictions, boundaries; in the dark we cannot see much and can only move around in a limited manner before bumping into obstacles. It also signifies how sometimes our ignorance leads us to think that the choices in front of us are the only choices available. Saturn is also a potential life-destroyer; dangerous times are indicated when it becomes activated as time lord.


However, the Moon and Saturn are sometimes friends. They are sympathetic when it comes to moisture. From a medical perspective, both the Moon and Saturn produces dropsy, a health condition that arises from an excess accumulation of fluids in certain parts of the body. Additionally, we often see delineations that Saturn indicates injuries or death that are related to water, like drowning, etc. We also know that the Moon is related to moisture from the fact that the tides on Earth seems to fluctuate with the phases of the Moon. There are probably many more examples of this.

Notice that the book in which Agrippa describes the scheme where Moon is friends with Saturn is called "Natural Magic". The word "natural" here has a similar meaning to "natural philosophy". So Agrippa probably refers the effects that Moon and Saturn has on nature; they are both moisturising, and hence, "friends" in that sense.



So when we say that A and B are enemies, we also need to ask, "in what sense?" For we can readily observe in real life that there are people who are opposites in some aspects, and yet they remain friends. Similarly, when planets oppose each other, they may not reject each other completely.
